TURKYE

With 10 million animals running free in Turkey, they are a common sight in both urban and rural areas. Istanbul's stray dogs and cats even became movie stars with the 2014 documentaries "Kedi" and 2020's "Stray."

However, legal protection for these creatures has only been guaranteed in recent years.2004 was a landmark year for both domestic and stray animals in Turkey.

It marked the introduction of penalties for animal cruelty and new regulations for stray animals.These regulations specified that stray animals could only be taken in for vaccination, treatment, sterilization and rehabilitation, after which they must be released back into their natural habitat.

Over the years, new laws have been added and previous regulations amended. Additionally, in 2019, an Animal Research Commission was established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to identify problems and recommend solutions to improve animal welfare.

According to Law no. 7332, passed on July 14, 2021, all metropolitan municipalities in Turkey are required to establish an animal center by December 31, 2022, with district municipalities being given until December 31, 2024.

ROMANIA

This is the day when all animals on the planet, whether wild or domestic, are celebrated. The most important mission of this holiday is that, through education and awareness, the world we live in becomes a kinder and fairer place for animals.

All over the world, events are organized whose purpose is to highlight the importance that animals have in our lives, and the number of countries that get involved in supporting this day and its significance is increasing from year to year. Animals are to a great extent influenced by our actions, by more or less invasive interventions in nature, and our accountability towards all non-speakers is absolutely necessary.

There is even a universal declaration of animal rights, which calls attention to the right to respect and to exist within an ecological balance. Romania's fauna is one of the richest and most varied in Europe, however, some species have disappeared from the territory of our country. We next propose an exercise to travel to the past, to tell you about three of them.

The elk, the largest representative of the cervid family, was known and hunted by our ancestors. The Romanians called it a platoon. Linguistic, historical evidence and geographical toponyms attest to the presence of this animal on the territory of our country. It is still present in Scandinavia and northern Europe, Russia, the USA and Canada.

The ox, the largest representative of wild cattle, was an extremely strong, imposing and aggressive animal. The history of the bour has been studied with great competence by Professor Eugen Botezat, since 1913. It is present on the coat of arms of Romania, as well as on the coat of arms of medieval Moldova. The last specimen survived in Poland until 1627, when it was killed in a hunting party.

The zăgan or bearded eagle ruled the heights of the Carpathians in the past. It is a large bird with a wingspan of 280 cm and weighs between 5 and 9 kilograms. The last zagan was shot in 1938 in Pasul Turnu Roşu, near the western slope of the Cozia Mountains. Today it lives only in a few European countries, especially in the Alps and the Pyrenees, but also in Asia.

Other animals, declared extinct in the past, such as bison, beaver or bustard, are now finding their home again in Romania thanks to rewilding or conservation programs. Some species, such as the European mink (the rarest mammal in Europe's fauna) or the birch grouse, are threatened with extinction.

We want to take advantage of this event to remind you that nature is the home of wild animals and that it is important to support conservation and protection programs for both animals and nature in general.

Curiosities about animals:

On the occasion of World Animal Day, share some fascinating facts about animals with your classmates:

• the ostrich can run 70 kilometers per hour;

• the roar of a lion can be heard from five kilometers away;

• the skeleton of sharks consists of cartilage; they have no bones;

• because they forget the places where they buried their hazelnuts, squirrels help plant hundreds of trees annually;

• the milk produced by hippopotamuses is pink;

• polar bear fur is actually colorless; the hairs are hollow, like little tubes that attract the light and create the illusion that they are white;

• the length of a chameleon's tongue is equal to or greater than that of its body;

• snakes do not hear;

• the only mammal that cannot walk backwards is the kangaroo.

These are just nine of the countless fascinating facts about animals! Thus, we can understand the diversity and beauty of nature. From small to large, every animal is special and deserves to be protected.
